FIRST GRADE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS
ELA
I CAN…
- understand a story
- retell a story using the 5 finger retell
- write complete simple sentences
- write a question sentence
- write a compound sentence
- write a strong feeling sentence
- write a command sentence
- use short vowel sounds
- use long vowel sounds
- make words by blending sounds
- say beginning, middle, and end sounds in words I hear
- spell and read words with digraphs (example: sh, th, ch, wh)
- use vowel teams
- use final -e. (silent final -e, bossy -e, magic -e, silent-e, final-e)
- read high frequency words
- make connections in a story
- tell how two books are the same
- tell how two books are different
- write a narrative with 2 or more events
- write details about the story
- use words to show event order
- write a closure to the story
- build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges
- ask or answer questions about key details
MUSIC
I CAN…
- sing all the notes and rhythm of the song
- move appropriately to the music
- describe music by moving and/or drawing symbols
- understand what different parts of a song are; melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre & form
- listen to a performance and know how to control my body appropriately
ART
I CAN…
- understand a story being told through visual art
- give examples of how artwork is influenced by the environment from which it was created
MATH
I CAN…
- use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem
- apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract
- understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem
- add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10
- count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral
- understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones
- understand the following as special cases: (b) The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones
- understand the following as special cases: (c) The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones)
- partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.

PE/Health
