Frequently Asked Questions
WHO CAN BE SEEN?
- MAPS students age 5-21 can be seen for a variety of primary care and behavioral health services. Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) can be seen through age 26.
- The MAPS Student Health Center can be a child’s sole primary care provider, or can be supplemental care, as needed for injuries and urgent visits. For consistency in care, copies of visits will be sent to child’s primary care provider.
- If your student is too sick to attend school, you can still schedule an appointment and bring your student to the MAPS Student Health Center for services.
WHERE IS THE MAPS STUDENT HEALTH CENTER LOCATED?
The MAPS Student Health Center is located within the Manistee Middle & High School – 525 12th Street.
NMHSI has another health center in Manistee – 148 W. Parkdale. Students and/or their families are able to schedule primary care appointments here too!
WHEN CAN APPOINTMENTS BE SCHEDULED?
Students or parents can schedule appointments during or after school. The MAPS Student Health Center is also open during school holidays and throughout the summer, with possible adjustments in hours.
WHAT IS THE COST?
As a medical provider, the MAPS Student Health Center bills health insurance for patient services. Our program accepts all insurance and all types of Medicaid. We also offer insurance enrollment support as well as a sliding fee scale for families with no insurance, large spend downs or high-deductible plans. Insurance or not, everyone is welcome here!
HOW WILL PARENTS BE INVOLVED?
- Parents can schedule appointments and give permission/consent for appointments scheduled by students
- Parents can attend the appointment, or be contacted before/during/after the visit with details and recommendations.
- Parents provide insurance information and submit payment, if necessary. Parents can also receive support in applying for insurance, or, if eligible, can pay based on a sliding fee scale.
CAN STUDENTS SCHEDULE CONFIDENTIAL SERVICES?
Per Michigan and/or Federal law, students age 14+ may request confidential services without parental consent or notification. Confidential services include the following:
- Mental Health Counseling Service (12 visits or 4 consecutive months).
- Sexually transmitted infection testing, diagnosing and treatment.
- Substance abuse counseling.
- Family planning services of education, pregnancy testing and prenatal care. Per Michigan law, the MAPS Student Health
- Center cannot prescribe or distribute birth control on school property. It also does not allow the discussion of or referral for abortion services. Patients may be referred for birth control to their primary care provider or other community resources.
- Test results will be kept confidential and we will do our best to ensure the billing and fee collection processes do not breach patient confidentiality.

Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc.

Centra Wellness Network
Centra Wellness Network is the publicly funded Community Mental Health Service Provider for Manistee and Benzie Counties. In collaboration with providers and community partners, Centra Wellness Network serves more than 1,200 individuals annually. CWN administers the SafeNet programming available in the MAPS district, although not funded by the MAPS Behavioral Health Services grants, plays a critical role in student support.

Program funding was provided by the State of Michigan’s State School Aid Fund funded through a competitive grant by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Manistee County Quality of Life Fund of the Manistee County Community Foundation.

This programs was funded in part by a contribution from the United Way of Manistee County to support the construction of the Child & Adolescent Health Center at MMHS.
Michigan Health Endowment Fund
The Michigan Health Endowment Fund works to improve the health and wellness of Michigan residents and reduce the cost of healthcare, with a special focus on children and seniors. The Michigan Health Endowment Fund Grant was awarded in October 2019 to Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. allowing the placement of a full-time behavioral health counselor in the MAPS district, along with a community health worker who will facilitate an integrated model to assure students also get connected to medical and oral health care.
