Marina Reid is a senior at MMHS and she is 1 of 25 students in Michigan selected to attend the Youth Conference on National Affairs-CONA; there were over 1500 students who applied.
Reid is part of a school organization offered here at MMHS called Youth in Government (YIG). These student representatives write and amend bills in the peer committee. They also debate these bills and see if they pass. At CONA, Reid will have an opportunity to meet like-minded students who are serious about politics.
She is going to Michigan State University and majoring in Biology and Environmental science with a Pre-law track. She hopes to attend law school and possibly practice in a big city like New York and experience city life. But for right now, she is very satisfied being in Michigan and is making plans to finish both her undergraduate and graduate degrees right here in her home state.
Reid is fundraising to earn money to attend CONA. She will need to raise $1500 in order to attend in July. While at CONA, every student representative will bring forward a proposal.
At each round, peer representatives/groups will vote on which proposal will move forward. They will keep repeating this process until the final 15. They will also take a trip to Philadelphia to visit government buildings.
When Reid isn’t busy with politics and debate, she enjoys theater and musicals. This past year, she played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz. She is also the varsity captain of the swim team and has participated in tennis. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she also stands at first chair trombone in the Manistee High School Symphonic Band, and she hopes to join the Michigan State University Symphonic Band.
She hopes that after graduation she sees younger classmates continue in YIG. “It is such a great place to make friends and a safe place to learn to be confident and push yourself outside your comfort zone.”
We are so proud of Marina, and we hope you can also share your support with words of congratulations.
