This past weekend, senior Braydon Sorenson of MMHS, won the central region overall for USSS in Searchmont located in Canada.
Braydon started skiing at the young age of 5 years old. When he was 7 years old, he went to his first race and fell in love with racing and the next year he started club racing. He stated that he just absolutely loves skiing, so he looks forward to training. He trains almost every single day. He is part of the Onekama Ski team and CCSC (Crystal Community Ski Club) he trains under coaches Curt Mathieu and Hunter Steinkamp.
He qualified for Team Michigan and he raced in New Hampshire. His team placed 4th out of 11 states. Team Michigan takes the top 12 males and females from the entire state.
Before a race, he makes sure to visualize the course and ground himself. After that, he says to “Just send it!”
His piece of advice to someone younger is “Put the time in and trust the process and your coaches. Make sure to have a good mindset”.
This came into play for Sorenson when he spent 3 years in rehabilitation for two injuries to the same leg.
First he broke his femur and sustained a spiral fracture. Once he was healed up, he ended up breaking his tibia/fibula on the same leg.
He said that skiing is a very mental sport and he is so grateful to the people who held him accountable through rehab and all the work that it took.
When he isn’t busy on the slopes, he enjoys playing football and golf. In football, he was first team all conference and first team all region. He was first team all conference the last two years and first team all region for golf. Their spring season is starting up and he looks forward to warm weather and playing some golf. As if he wasn’t busy enough, he also spends time at West Shore Community college in their drumline and he enjoys being in the band at MMHS.
He plans on going to West Shore Community college next year while he continues to train. He hopes to keep racing and coaching and one day go to a NCAA University.
