On a picture-perfect day, Mrs. Tanya Hunter, Kennedy Elementary 5th Grade Teacher, was honored for being selected as The American Legion Zone 4 “2021 Teacher of the Year.”

On May 26th, Brian Morrison, Department Education and Scholarship 4th Zone Committeemen, and Gary Walter, The American Legion 4th Zone Commander, presented Mrs. Hunter with a commemorative plaque and $500 grant, in front of Mrs. Hunter’s 5th grade students, family, and Principal Joanie Wiersma who had gathered outside to watch the ceremony.

This year, five teachers were selected as a “Teacher of the Year” from their respective state zone, and Mrs. Hunter represents Zone 4’s “Teacher of the Year.” The criteria for winning the award was based on the teacher’s competence, community involvement, and patriotism/
Americanism.

According to Kennedy Principal Wiersma, “In addition to setting a high bar for her students’ academic success, Mrs. Hunter creates deep relationships with her students. She supports her students’ social and emotional learning and truly attends to the needs of the whole child. We are so proud of our MAPS team member!

Congratulations, Mrs. Hunter!
